Speaker Critique-20% of the final grade.
Please answer the following questions in essay format. That
is, write a paper, replete with introduction, thesis statement, body, and
conclusion. I will not accept a document that simply answers the questions. Your
essay will be evaluated on the completeness of your response, the readability of
your paper, the organization of your critique, evidence of intellectual
engagement and critical reflection on your subject.
Note answering each question will require examples from the
speech. Simply making an abstract like “the speech used good language,” without
citing a particular example and what made it “good” will be insufficient to get
full credit. So, I highly suggest taking detailed notes during the
presentation, the more specific examples the better.

Paper Breakdown:
Part 1: Identify the speaking situation, attending
to the context, audience demographic, and purpose of the address.
Part 2: Next,
provide a truncated summary of the speech, specifically identifying the a) the
speeches thesis, b) its organization style, and c) the speaker’s main points.
Part 3: Reflecting
the topics covered in class, evaluate the address. This is an important part of
the paper and should compose at bulk of your essay. As such, simply saying “they
did a good job,” is an insufficient response. I would like you to consider the
speeches a) organization, b) language choice, c) vocal delivery, d) use of evidence,
and so on.
Part 4: After
identifying some potential place for improvement, I would like you to play the
role of teacher and make at least two
suggestions how the speaker can improve her/his speech. So, for example, you
may suggest that the speaker incorporate visual aids, because the inclusion of
bar graphs may demonstrate the full effect of climate change has on the oceans
